January 2006 - Bill Stephens Joins Evergreen
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Bill Stephens. I have been working in the tank cleaning industry for approximately 17 years and have recently made a significant change in my professional career. As of January 1, 2006 I am now employed by Evergreen Industrial Service's Tank Cleaning Division as the Sales Manager.
What can make a person decide to vacate a secure job of 17 years, at a large stable company? The answer is easy... commitment. John Hodges, owner of Evergreen Industrial has committed to assemble top notch, experienced personnel and state of the art equipment to be the premier tank cleaning contractor in the industry today.

This transformation has not happened overnight. Evergreen's Tank Cleaning Division has existed for 4 years. Growing at a controlled pace. Personnel, equipment and safety culture have to develop together to achieve the desired results.
Let's look at the life of a tank cleaning project. Our customer, ABC Refining, has a large crude oil tank which will require sludge removal, liquid solid separation and cleaning to hot work and inspection criteria. The dilemma, a short time line, the tank is in service during the bid phase and tank entry is restricted.
- Bid Walk: With over 80 years of experience the customers scope of work can be easily understood and the project criteria determined.
- Product Removal Procedure: A team will be formed which represent the most experience to achieve the desired results. Robotic sludge removal utilizing Evergreens RVTC hydraulically controlled manway cannon due to tank entry restrictions. Liquid/solid separation of materials removed utilizing centrifugation technology. Offering three distinct phases: Hydrocarbons (to customer specifications), solids (paint filter dryness specifications) and water (to wastewater treatment specifications).
- Final Cleaning Procedure: Personnel entry is normally limited to this phase of the project. Here the remaining sludge is removed and the water wash phase of the project is accomplished. Upon completion, the tank is clean, gas free and ready for hot work permitting.
- Additional High Pressure Water Blasting: In many cases, high pressure (>10,000 psi) is required to remove tank liners, adhered rust scale or "coked" materials present on the stock surface of the tank. Evergreen's Industrial Division will be employed to complete this portion of the project. Upon completion of the hydroblast phase, the tank is prepped for floor scan to meet API 653 criteria.
- Total Package: The combination of Evergreen's Tank Cleaning and Industrial Services Divisions can offer an overall project package. Included are sludge removal by robotics, liquid/solid separation by centrifugation, final cleaning including high pressure hydroblasting, complete vacuum truck services (liquid vacuum to "air mover" type applications), transportation and disposal of both liquids and solids.
- Bid Presentation: Every customer has a financial preference for the proposal presentation. Options include, Time and Material, Time and Material (Not to Exceed), Lump Sum, Unit Rate as well as combinations for each phase of the project. Evergreen's years of experience develop the confidence to construct proposals to the customer's preference.
- Job Preparation: Every project is unique. The equipment configuration is designed specifically for each project. The equipment is specifically designed and manufactured to Evergreens specifications and is maintained at the Pasadena facility. All equipment is "skid mounted", therefore the equipment is specifically selected for the project and assembled onsite to perform specific customer driven tasks.
- Safety: Safety is designed into each system. System meaning both personnel and equipment. A safety culture has been established in personnel through constant progressive training, starting with upper management to field operators. State of the art robotics prevents the exposure of personnel to hazardous conditions, vapors and confined space.
- Communication: It is essential that the customer has knowledge of the day to day progress of the project. Written daily reports update the activities to date address any changes in the work scope, notify of upcoming activities and daily as well as costs to date. No surprises... imagine that! Upon completion of the project, a concise Final Report is presented. It includes production data (total barrels removed, total cutter stock utilized, recovered oil, solids for disposal, project duration and a total project cost).
My goal as Sales Manager of Evergreen's Tank Cleaning Division is to provide the customer with a safe, professional approach to tank cleaning. To receive the opportunity to offer concise proposals, complete projects to upgraded standards and continue to do business based on the safety and skills of professionals.
